2016 National Junior and Senior Championships

Island wrestlers returned home with a total of four medals from the freestyle competitions at the national championships recently.

Summerside’s Hannah Taylor won two medals – silver in the junior 59kg category and bronze in the senior event.Ligrit Sadiku of Summerside won a silver in the junior men’s 55kg division, and Veronica Keefe of Winsloe was also a silver-medal winner in the senior 75kg class.

Taylor, wrestling for the Wolfpack, defeated Larissa Bufalino of Brock (5-0) and Chelsey Sicard of Guelph (10-0), before losing in the final to the 2015 national champion, Tianna Kennett of the Calgary Dinos, by a score of 8-3. Kennett was later named outstanding female wrestler of the junior tournament.

Senior event

Taylor then competed in the senior event and, despite conceding a significant disadvantage in age and experience, she finished third to take home bronze.

Sadiku, wrestling for London-Western, defeated Robert Smith of the McMaster Marauders (10-0), and Oscar Jr. Bulaqui of Burnaby (13-4), before losing in the final 9-0 to Darthe Capellan, also of Burnaby.

Winsloe’s Veronica Keefe, wrestling for the Montreal YMHA, won her silver medal following wins over Kristine Longeau of the Cattown Club (10-4), Gracelynn Doogan of Guelph (10-0) and Peyten Smith from Burnaby Mountain (6-1, pin), before losing to the tough Justina DiStasio of the BMWC, 7-0.

Trevor Banks of Charlottetown wrestled for Montreal YMHA, and he finished sixth overall in the men’s senior 57kg class.
